The spectroscope is an instrument used in chemistry and physics to observe and analyze the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a source. It can have an optical prism, or a diffraction grating. In astronomy the spectrograph is applied to the telescope so that the entrance slit coincides with the focus of the lens. The result is the spectrum of the star whose image is formed in the focus.
The instrument for sale has a glass prism placed at the center of a circular platform supported by a sturdy column resting on three metal feet. Light rays come from a slit on the end of the collimator and they are made parallel to the exit of the collimator itself; then they are diverted from the equilateral prism and observed with a telescope with rack lens. A second collimator sends inside the telescope the image of a graduated scale so that it overlaps the spectrum.
