1742654260Code 8086 Astronomical TelescopeAstronomical ground telescope in brass with round section, with single extension focusing and rack, with finder scope, complete with rack-and-pinion tripod in oak wood and original walnut case containing the optical part. Good condition, reinforced brass tube with optics, perfectly functional. French manufacture from the second half of the 19th century. Maximum height of tripod cm 160 - inch 63, maximum length of telescope cm 153 - inch 60, focal diameter cm 9.5 inch 3.8.

According to legend, one day in 1608 the sons of Hans Lipperhey, an eyeglass maker from Middelburg, were playing with lenses in their father's workshop. When one of the sons placed a concave lens close to his eye, holding a convex lens in the other hand, and stretching out his arm towards the top of the cathedral bell tower, he looked through it and saw the weathercock on the top grow larger and get closer. Having immediately shown the phenomenon to his father, he fixed the lenses to a small board to make observation easier, thus creating the first rudimentary optical approach instrument. Unfortunately for Lipperhey, however, when he submitted a patent application for this instrument to the States General, within a few days other Dutch eyeglass makers also claimed the invention.
Della Porta and Kepler also studied the same subject, but Galileo probably did not read the works of his two "colleagues" and learned about the telescope from some of his acquaintances in Venice, as his biographer, Vincenzo Viviani, also confirms. Galileo never actually claimed to have invented the telescope, but della Porta, feeling defrauded of the invention, wrote in a letter to Federico Cesi in 1609: "...I have seen the secret of the telescope and it is nonsense, and it is taken from my book IX De Refractione...". Indirectly contradicting della Porta, when Galileo showed the telescope to some senators of the Republic of Venice, the astonishment he caused was enormous.
