1761061412Code 8275 Astronomical TelescopeA ground-mounted, round-section brass astronomical telescope with two rack-and-pinion focusing and a finderscope. It comes with a wooden tripod and a wooden case containing the optical components. Signed by Edmund Wheeler, London, end-19th century. Good condition, the brass tube with the optical components is reinforced and fully functional. Dimensions: telescope length 134 cm - 52.7 in, focal length 8 cm - 3.2 in, tripod height 163 cm - 64 in.

Edmund Wheleer, active in London between 1840 and 1880, was a manufacturer and seller of optical scientific instruments, including telescopes and microscopes, for which he built an excellent reputation. In addition to selling instruments, he also gave scientific lectures to the public with the aim of popularizing science.

According to legend, one day in 1608, the children of Hans Lipperhey, an eyeglass maker from Middelburg, were playing with lenses in their father's workshop. When one of the sons placed a concave lens close to his eye, holding a convex lens in the other hand, and stretching his arm toward the top of the cathedral bell tower to look through it, he saw the weathercock at the top grow larger and move closer. Immediately demonstrating the phenomenon to his father, he fixed the lenses to a small board to make observation easier, thus creating the first rudimentary optical approach instrument. Unfortunately for Lipperhey, however, when he submitted a patent application for this instrument to the States General, within days other Dutch eyeglass makers also claimed the invention.
