1693670535Code 7654 BarometerStick barometer in ebonized wood, manufactured in Northern Italy in the early 19th century, housed in an elegant case made to measure in glass and ebonized wood with decorative motifs. Barometer with ebonized wooden tank complete with marine bone float indicating the correct mercury level, regulated by the setting screw underneath the tank. The barometer is also complete with a rack reading vernier for checking the variation of atmospheric pressure, a hygrometer placed at the top and two large mercury and alcohol thermometers for algebraic comparison of the temperature. Barometer measures Height 120 cm – 47.5 inch, width 18.3 cm – 7.2 inch depth/thickness 8 cm – 3.2 inch. Case measures height 148 cm – 58.2 inch, width 24 cm – 9.5 inch, depth 11.2 cm – 4.3 inch. Excellent condition, perfectly functional. The barometer is intact, original and complete in all its parts. The barometric tube and the tank have been emptied of mercury for safety during transport to avoid mercury spills, as the barometer should always travel in an upright position, which is practically impossible. The mercury for filling will be delivered together with the barometer in a special sealed container.

Since ancient times man, as a farmer and navigator, has observed and attempted to predict the trend of the climate. The scientific study of the changes that occur in the atmosphere began in the mid-seventeenth century, in relation to the experiments aimed at demonstrating the existence of the vacuum, which the ancient philosophers denied because "nature abhors the vacuum!". If you fill a long tube with water and place it upside down in a bucket of water, the column of liquid will drop until its weight is counterbalanced by the air pressure on the surface of the water in the bucket: at some point in the upper and closed end of the tube there will be a vacuum.

Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), mathematician and physicist, disciple of Galileo, was the first, in 1643, to build an instrument capable of detecting changes in air pressure. He described his experiment as the result of the discovery that changes in atmospheric pressure are related to changes in the weather.
