132201216282734Code 2946 Antique compass 1700Rare and particular antique magnetic compass, a topographic and travel compass in mahogany, English manufacture end XVIII century. It's an antique instrument with a magnetic needle that can rotate on a horizontal plain indicating with its point the magnetic North, beautiful compass card by an engraved copper plate with 16 winds with goniometric circle divided in 360°. It has the block of compass needle. Very good condition. Measures cm 5.5x5.2 - inches 2.16x2.
The Greeks and the Romans didn't know the possibility to use magnetic fields for orient, but this possibility probably was known by the Chinese people: about in 2600 B.C. Hoang-Ti the emperor won Tchi-Yeou the prince using a magic cart, the See-Nan (cart indicating the South) and finding the way of escape of enemy that has been covered by smoke: on this cart there was a rotating human shaped figure with an arm stretched indicating the South (obviously indicating the North too, but the South was the most important cardinal point for the Chinese people). the Chinese people used magnetic fields also for spectacles: throwing magnetized arrows like dice, they indicated south like a magic, amazing the public.
