153201317114734Code 3626 Aircraft compass 1940sAeronautical brass and aluminum compass fixed on wooden board signed NISTRI OMI Rome '40s; this is a gyro compass, immersed in a viscous liquid (white oil) which tends to maintain its axis of rotation oriented in a fixed direction. A magnifying glass fixed on the transparent part of the compass allows an accurate reading. Very good condition fully functional. Measures 8x11 cm - inches 3.14x4.33.

The gyroscope is a wheel that due to the rotation tends to maintain its axis always with the same orientation. If the axis is braked by immersion in a viscous liquid, you will have a resistance that will gradually bring the axis in the same orientation in a north-south direction. Because the operation of the gyroscope is linked to the slow rotation of the Earth, if the ship or airplane on which is mounted too rapidly changes its direction, operation is disturbed.

The Nistri Optical Mechanics was an Italian factory of instruments for photogrammetry, established in Rome in 1926 by Umberto Nistri, and that reached its peak in the years 60/70. Since the '80s it became part of Agusta and the division that produced instruments for aerial photography was divided into SARA Nistri and Aerofotogrammetrica Nistri. Because of the gradual abandonment of the family, the company went through many vicissitudes.
