New York made in the second half of the nineteenth century. Very good condition. Measurements cm 9,4x9,4x2,7- inch 3.8x3.8x1.1.

The Keuffel & Esser Co. company was a manufacturer of tools for design founded in 1867 by WJD Keuffel and H. Esser; the company began by selling tools for drawing and design in New York and then start selling, in 1876, surveying tools. In 1889 the company moved into new plant in New Jersey and in the ten years later it began to market new surveying instruments based on the studies of John Paul, an Italian immigrant. At the same time it also started the production of sextants, in agreement with the U.S. Navy. In the 1920s the company began to manufacture slide rules; during the Second World War it made fire tools for the U.S. government and it won three Army-Navy E Award for excellence in manufacturing.

Bases for using a magnetic needle are described by the Arab scientist Bailak Al Qabajaqi: in 1242 during a travel from Tripoli in Syria to Alexandria the captain of ship used it, putting in a pail with water, on its surface, a piece of cork with a needle and magnetizing it with a magnet; the needle moved immediately in the North-South direction.
