1499431352Code 5512 Antique bearing compassPrismatic bearing compass, 1915 circa. Very good condition, perfectly working. It is a small compass typically used in sailing navigation, on boats less susceptible to magnetic deviation. It also can be hand held and then away from the boat magnetic fields. It has a sight system with optical prism for magnification and a goniometric compass card to measure the angle between the line of sight and the magnetic north indicated by the needle. Diameter 5.3 cm, height cm 2.

The use of a magnetic needle is described by the Arab scientist Bailak Al Qabajaqi: in 1242 during a travel from Tripoli in Syria to Alexandria the captain of the ship used it, putting in a pail with water a piece of cork with a needle and magnetizing it with a magnet; the needle moved immediately in the North-South direction.
