1509716793Code 5908 American compass 1900Liquid compass on universal joint mounted on walnut plank, American manufacture of the early 1900. This compass has a brass cylindrical box, named mortar; on its bottom a hard metal stem is fixed, named sensitive element; on this element it is leaned a compass card, appropriately fixed: the zero has to coincide with magnetic polarity. To limit friction, mortar is filled with a low freezing point liquid, that has to quench rapidly swings, and it is closed with a strong glass protection. Very good condition. Compass diameter cm 10.3, plank cm 16.3x10.3.

The invention of the compass is mysterious but it is well known that magnetite was discovered in Magnesia, a city of Asia Minor. We can find the first indications about the use in Europe of the magnetic force for orientation at the end of the XII century because of merchants and Arab navigators.
