1512571157Code 5942 Antique compassAntique and rare bearing magnetic brass compass, signed Cruchon & Emons made in 1918 for U.S Engineer Corps. It’s a small compass, diameter cm 5,3 – inches 2.1, tipically used in sailing navigation, so on boats with few magnetic deflection. Moreover this compass can be kept in the hand and so it can stay away from magnetic fields of boats. It has sight system with a goniometric compass card with wight winds, to measure the angle between the sight line and the North indicated by magnetic needle. With stop of needle. Very good condition.

The earliest historical notes on the use of magnetic power in Europe are dated back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of XIII century and attribute to the Amalfiers the exploitation of the properties of the magnet. The cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the XVI century. An exact description is given in the brief compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions to make a compass. The improvement of this instrument is largely attributed to the discoveries of new lands, from the mid-XVcentury.
