1513074306Code 5943 American Army compassSmall brass travel compass, supplied to the American Army during the First World War, shaped like a pocket watch, with a needle that rotates on a horizontal plane marking the direction of the magnetic North. Signed Taylor. On the lidf it’s engraved U.S.C.E. Compass card with eight winds. Diameter cm 4.5, height cm 1.3. Very good condition and perfectly working.
The first hints in Europe on the use of instruments using magnetic fields for orientation are dated back to the late twelfth century, especially thanks to the knowledge brought by merchants and sailors after contacts with the Arabs: we find hints in the work by Alexander Neckam "De nominibus utensilium" and in the works by Guyot de Provins, where the magnet is called "sailor’s friend". Even the inventory of a Sicilian ship of 1200’s, the San Nicolò, refers to the presence on board of a magnet and a "bussola di ligno", that is a wooden compass.

Do you provide an authenticity certificate/expertise?
Of course! The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin. Antik Arte & Scienza provides an expertise (as warranty) that contains a description, period and assignment or the author, if known, of the item.

Shipping by DHL or UPS is free (but if we are shipping to a country non-EU remember that any taxes and customs duties are on your expense), and items will be sent just after receiving of payment.

Other countries: delivering on the average in 5 weekdays; custom duties charged to the buyer.
