It is a small compass, diameter cm 5.3 -inch 2.1, height 1.8 cm - 0.6 inch. It can be held by hand and then away from the boat magnetic fields. It is equipped with a system of sight, a goniometric compass card with eight winds and a block of needle to measure the angle between the line of sight and the magnetic north indicated by the needle. Very good condition.
The first hints in Europe on the use of instruments using magnetic fields for orientation are dated back to the late twelfth century, especially thanks to the knowledge brought by merchants and sailors after contacts with the Arabs: we find hints in the work by Alexander Neckam "De nominibus utensilium" and in the works by Guyot de Provins, where the magnet is called "sailor’s friend". Even the inventory of a Sicilian ship of 1200’s, the San Nicolò, refers to the presence on board of a magnet and a "bussola di ligno", that is a wooden compass.
Vintage compasses are measuring instruments that had always a large public of collectors, that choose them between all antique instruments.

Do you provide an authenticity certificate/expertise?
Of course! The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin. Antik Arte & Scienza provides an expertise (as warranty) that contains a description, period and assignment or the author, if known, of the item.
