1525859771Code 6013A Usanite compass 1918Small travel compass of chrome-plated brass, supplied to the American army during the First World War; the lid is engraved: ENG. DEPT. USA 1918; shaped like a pocket watch, instrument consisting of a magnetized needle free to rotate on a horizontal plane, marking the direction of magnetic North. Signed Usanite Taylor Rochester Pat Apr 20-1915. Compass card with eight winds. Diameter 4.5 cm - inches 1.7, height 1.2 cm - 0.3 inches. Very good condition, fully functional.

The Taylor Instrument Companies was a US manufacturer located in Rochester, N.Y. Taylor's business began in 1851 when George Taylor and his partner Kendall built thermometers in Rochester, selling them from their truck. The company's name was changed in 1872 into Taylor Bros. and in 1900 acquired Short & Mason (London). The compass model called Usanite was also utilized by the soldiers in WW1 and marked in this case 'ENG. DEPT. U.S.A.' (plus the year of production) on the lid.

The use of a magnetic needle is described by the Arab scientist Bailak Al Qabajaqi: in 1242 during a travel from Tripoli in Syria to Alexandria the captain of the ship used it, putting in a pail with water a piece of cork with a needle and magnetizing it with a magnet; the needle moved immediately in the North-South direction.
