1551878204Code 6283 Nautical compassBrass and glass nautical compass on universal joint signed Coubro & Scrutton Ltd London from the second half of the 19th century and mounted on oak wood board. The compass consists of a brass and glass vessel on the bottom of which is fixed a metal stem on which the eight-wind compass card is placed. Good condition, fully functional. Board 18x10 cm - 7x3.93 inches, compass diameter 10 cm - 3.93 inches, total height 15 cm - 5.9 inches.

The Linder Family had a maritime background and since 1793 had a business of ship's chandlers in London and Liverpool. Coubro and Scrutton Ltd was based on a partnership of ship's chandlers created in 1848 and had branches in all major ports. In supplying shipping needs the company developed an expertise in lifting gear and the building of masts. A special mast order by Marconi took the company into the world of radio and antennae, including for the BBC, ITV and the armed forces. Between 1900 and 1960 the company was under the direction of Charles Linder (1867-1962). He was succeeded by his son, Leslie Linder.
