1580730768Code 6505 Japanese compassHand-held magnetic bakelite compass, signed Saura Japan made in the 1950s. The compass can be backlit, the batteries are inserted into the handle. Height 24 cm - 9.44 inches, compass diameter 9.7 cm - 3.8 inches. Very good condition.

In 1915, the founder, S. Saura established Saura Works, as a private company,in Shiogama, Miyagi, one of the famous and good fishery ports in the northern part of main island of Japan. After moving to Tokyo, by 1933 the company was appointed by Ministry of DOR(presently Dept of Transport) as a recognized factory to provide manufacture and services. In 1953, incorporated as Saura Keiki Seisakusho Co., Ltd., and succeeded all business of Saura Works.

The earliest historical notes on the use of magnetic power in Europe are dated back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of XIII century and attribute to the Amalfiers the exploitation of the properties of the magnet. The cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the XVI century. An exact description is given in the brief compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions to make a compass. The improvement of this instrument is largely attributed to the discoveries of new lands, from the mid-XVcentury.
