It is a survey instrument, for measurement of horizontal and vertical angles and magnetic orientation. The instrument consists of two fixed alidades with sights, a large compass complete with double goniometric circle engraved from 0 ° to 360 ° with needle lock and brass cover, double centesimal vernier for precise reading of angles and joint with tip for tripod. Excellent condition, fully functional. Cm 31x20x23 - inches 12.2x7.87x9.
The Davis Derby firm was born as a Leeds-based manufacturer of optical, surveying and mathematical instruments established by Gabriel Davis in 1779. Gabriel Davis’s nephew John (1810-1873) became apprenticed to J. Abrahams who styled himself as Mathematical Instrument Maker to the Duke of Wellington. On completion of his apprenticeship, John Davis joined his uncle’s family business. After its move to Derby in 1844, the business became a leading manufacturer of mine safety lamps and lighting systems. When John Davis died in 1873 his son Henry Davis was appointed to run the business. Under the leadership of Henry Davis the business continued to expand moving in 1875 to All Saints Works, Amen Alley in Derby. Maintaining its strong market position, the business grew throughout the second half of the XIX century, expanding into foreign markets in early part of the XX century. From 1945 the focus of the business shifted towards the production of electrical products in mines; today Davis Derby is known as a specialist supplier of electronic equipment for hazardous and demanding environments.

Do you provide an authenticity certificate/expertise?
Of course! The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin. Antik Arte & Scienza provides an expertise (as warranty) that contains a description, period and assignment or the author, if known, of the item.
