1669288435Code 7438 Pocket CompassPrismatic bearing bush in brass; it is a small compass, signed F-L (French Limited) N. 147599 produced in 1918. It can also be held in the hand and therefore away from magnetic fields. It is equipped with a sighting system with a finish line complete with optical prism for magnification and a goniometric wind rose in order to make it possible to measure the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle. Complete with wind rose block. Very good condition, fully functional, complete with leather case bearing the date 1932 , diameter cm 5,3 x 2 – inches 2.1 x 0.70.

The earliest historical notes on the use of magnetic power in Europe are dated back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of XIII century and attribute to the Amalfiers the exploitation of the properties of the magnet. The cardanic suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the XVI century. An exact description is given in the brief compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions to make a compass. The improvement of this instrument is largely attributed to the discoveries of new lands, from the mid-XV century.
