1709294776Code 7740 Survey CompassRare magnetic nautical survey compass, in brass, from the end of the 19th century, signed Elliott Bros London, complete with leather case. It is a small compass, 7 cm in diameter, typically used in recreational sailing, therefore on boats less subject to magnetic deviation. Furthermore it can be held in the hand and therefore away from the magnetic fields of the boat. It is equipped with a sighting system with target complete with optical prism for magnification and a goniometric eight-wind rose on paper so as to make it possible to measure the angle between the sighting line and the north indicated by the needle magnetic. Complete with needle lock. Good condition. Diameter 7 cm - 2.8 inches, thickness 2 cm - 0.8 inches.

Elliott Brothers was a renowned scientific instrument manufacturer in London between 1853 and 1873. The company was founded in 1804 by William Elliott and was one of the leading scientific instrument manufacturers of the 19th century. In 1850 William Elliott joined his sons Frederick and Charles and the company became Elliott & sons: it had its headquarters at 56 Strand in London. The firm of Elliott & sons presented their instruments at the Great Fair of 1851, winning medals for electric telegraphs, globes, maps and drawing instruments. Frederick and Charles took over the company in 1853 and it then became Elliott Brothers: while their father specialized in drawing instruments, they expanded the range of products, producing for example mathematical, optical and meteorological instruments.

The Greeks and Romans were still unaware of the possibility of exploiting magnetic fields to orient themselves, while it seems that this possibility was already known to the Chinese in some way: around 2600 BC. Emperor Hoang-Ti managed to defeat Prince Tchi-Yeou in battle thanks to a "magical" chariot, the See-Nan (south-indicating chariot). The emperor, thanks to this device, identified the enemy's escape route, even though the enemy had hidden it with a blanket of smoke: a human-shaped wooden silhouette was fixed on the chariot which rotated on itself and which, with the outstretched arm always pointed south (indicating the south obviously also indicated the north at the same time, but the south was considered by the Chinese to be the most important cardinal point). The Chinese also used their discoveries relating to magnetic fields as a form of entertainment and show: they threw magnetized arrows as if they were dice, and these aligned in a south-north direction as if by magic, which greatly impressed and amazed the spectators.
