1709814301Code 7860 Nautical CompassNautical magnetic compass, made in the USA from the 1930s. Good condition. Housed in its original box with wooden slotted lid and mounted on a gimbal. Box measures 12x12x8.5 cm – 4.8x4.8x3.4 inches. Good condition, signs of use on the box.

The compass is made up of a cylindrical brass container, called a mortar, on the bottom of which is fixed a hard metal stem, called a sensitive element, on which the wind rose is placed, suitably fastened, so that the zero coincides with the magnetic polarity.

The magnetic needle was reportedly used in China as early as 2634 BC. In fact, ancient Chinese annals refer to a chariot on which there were some human-like figures who, with their arms stretched forward, indicated the south, i.e. the most important cardinal point for the Chinese. A precise description of this chariot is found only under the reign of Emperor Hian-tsoung (806-820 AD), while the first mentions of the properties of the magnet appear in a Chinese dictionary from the 2nd century AD. The first historical notes on the use of magnetic directive force in Europe date back to the end of the century. XII or at the beginning of the XIII and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. The news that they had invented the compass, given by the Panormita and repeated by Flavio Biondo, gave rise to the legend of a non-existent Flavio Gioia of Amalfi, who in 1302 built the first compass. The instrument would have spread in the Mediterranean and would then have been imported into the Nordic countries.
