1715358679Code 7905 SundialRare early 19th century equinoctial sundial in turned and engraved brass, signed Samuel Yeates Dublin (1762-1834). Good working condition. Measurements 9.5x2 cm – 3.8x0.7 inches. It is an ancient instrument for measuring time, which allows you to know the daytime solar time, simply by observing the shadow produced by the gnomon perpendicular to the needle whose orientation is given by the magnetic compass. Turned brass case complete with lid, on the bottom of which a beautiful eight-wind rose of fine workmanship complete with protractor circle divided into 360° has been finely engraved with a burin. At the center of the sundial is the gnomon, fixed above the protective glass of the compass; by placing the instrument in the North/South position, the gnomon projects its shadow into the circle of the ring where the daytime hours are engraved in Roman characters.

Samuel Yates founded his business in Dublin in 1762, having previously been apprenticed to another Irish optician. In 1790 he opened a shop which would be the basis for the business until 1922. Yates did not limit himself to optical instruments but also produced mathematical, scientific and measuring instruments such as compasses, theodolites and barometers. The company defined itself as a manufacturer of instruments for the University, arriving at the beginning of the 1900s to develop telephones. One of the sons moved to London where in 1833 he became responsible for the instruments of the Greenwich astronomical observatory.

The sundial is a horizontal line that passes through the North and South points. Meridiana, in our language, is also synonymous with sundial. From ancient times to the present day, sundials of different types, shapes and sizes have been created, such as portable models that performed the functions of our wrist and pocket watches. Different peoples and different cultures have then adopted various ways of measuring time in relation to their needs: in fact, ancient sundials can still be observed which do not follow the hours we use today (astronomical hours) but, for example, Babylonian hours, Italic hours, canonical hours, etc.
