Geomantic compasses epitomize the enormous complexity of Chinese thought and, in practical terms, were intended to identify the correlations between the natural universe and humankind.
The form and function of the geomantic compass still in use in Hong Kong and Taiwan reflect those of about a thousand years ago (Song era). The instrument is round; at its center, under a small glass bell jar, is a magnetic needle suspended on a pivot that points south according to the Chinese convention, unlike the European convention, which always referred to north. Around this center are other concentric circles called ēng, of increasing diameter and divided into sectors. The number varies between 16 and 24, although compasses with a greater number of circles, up to 40, have been documented. Each of these ēng represents an aspect of Chinese cosmography.
The geomancer, who knows how to use the compass to choose the right place for a house or a tomb, can, by consulting some of the compass's cheng and then a manual, determine the point in its cyclical evolution of each of the Five Elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—in the chosen site. He can thus determine whether the energetic potential of the negative yin and positive yang forces is optimally balanced in that location.
The principles of this art, born in China over four thousand years ago, are based on the I Ching, or Book of Changes, the foundation of nearly all traditional Chinese philosophy. Finding the right balance between Yin and Yang within homes ensures that the body and spirit of those who live there benefit greatly.
In China, a Feng Shui expert was consulted to help choose the right plot of land for building, orient the house, and locate the main door based on the head of the family's birth date. He also helped determine the construction start date and the family's move-in date. A Feng Shui expert is also able to evaluate a home's energy and decide which "remedies" to adopt to harmonize the energy within the home and bring prosperity and serenity to the family who lives there.
