1760196717Code 8229 Aeronautical CompassSestrel H B & S London aeronautical compass, made in England in the 1930s, in brass and glass, mounted on a custom-made oak board.
The compass consists of a cylindrical brass container, called a mortar, with a hard metal stem fixed to the bottom. The eight-compass compass rose is held on this stem, secured so that the zero point coincides with the magnetic polarity. To minimize friction, the mortar is filled with a low-freezing liquid, which also serves to rapidly dampen any oscillations of the compass rose. It is enclosed in a sturdy protective glass.
The compass features a movable graduated disc inserted above the compass to set the direction to follow and which can be rotated on itself.

Sestrel is a registered trademark of Henry Browne & Son, a major English manufacturer of high-quality compasses, inclinometers, sextants, and other instruments, founded in the second half of the 19th century. The 'Sestrel' brand name is derived from the initials of the qualities it embodies: SEnsitive – STeady – RELiable (sensitive – safe – reliable).
Sestrel is indeed a name synonymous with quality and precision, as evidenced by the number of instruments bearing that brand, both vintage and antique, still in use today.
The first historical references to the use of magnetic directional force in Europe date back to the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. Gimbal suspension made its first appearance around the middle of the 16th century. An exact description can be found in the short compendium “De la esfera y de la arte de navegar” by Martin Cortés (1551), which gives precise instructions for the construction of the compass. The great discoveries of new lands, from the middle of the 15th century onwards, are largely due to the improvements in this instrument.

Do you provide an authenticity certificate/expertise?
Of course! The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin. Antik Arte & Scienza provides an expertise (as warranty) that contains a description, period and assignment or the author, if known, of the item.
