1769182889Code 8231 Prismatic CompassSmall brass prismatic bearing compass, manufactured by J.M. Glauser London in 1939, No. B 5535 MK. IX, issued to British officers. Typically used in recreational sailing, therefore on vessels less subject to magnetic drift. Furthermore, it can be held in the hand and thus removed from any disturbing magnetic fields.
It features a sighting system with a complete optical prism for magnification and a protractor compass rose that allows measurement of the angle between the line of sight and the north indicated by the magnetic needle. Complete with compass rose lock and original leather case. Good condition, fully functional.
Dimensions: 5 x 2 cm - 1.9 x 0.7 in.
The company was founded in 1929 by Jean-Maurice Glauser, of Swiss origin. Its main products included prismatic, marching, and pocket compasses. With the founder's retirement, the company ceased operations in 1956.
The first historical references to the use of magnetic directional force in Europe date back to the late 12th century or early 13th century, and attribute the exploitation of the properties of the magnet to the Amalfitans. Gimbal suspension made its first appearance around the mid-16th century. An accurate description can be found in the short compendium De la esfera y de la arte de navegar by Martín Cortés (1551), which provides precise guidelines for the construction of the compass. Improvements to the instrument are largely responsible for the great discoveries of new lands, from the mid-15th century onwards.

Do you provide an authenticity certificate/expertise?
Of course! The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin. Antik Arte & Scienza provides an expertise (as warranty) that contains a description, period and assignment or the author, if known, of the item.
