Housed in its original mahogany box mounted on a universal joint, with brass locking clasps.

The compass consists of a cylindrical brass container, called a mortar, on the bottom of which is fixed a hard metal stem, called the sensing element, on which the compass rose rests, suitably secured so that the zero point coincides with the magnetic polarity.
The Star Compass Company was founded in 1905 in Dorchester, Boston, by Gustave A. Salzgeber, specializing in the production of high-quality magnetic nautical compasses at a time when navigation depended entirely on mechanical instruments. The company grew rapidly thanks to the reliability of its products, expanding its range to approximately 18 different models for vessels of all sizes and introducing innovations such as integrated magnetic compensation systems and improved dial readability. Star compasses were used not only in maritime applications but also in polar expeditions and explorations and in pioneering flights, including those of explorer Richard Byrd. In 1929, production moved to East Milton, Massachusetts, where the company remained active until 1969.
The first references to the use of instruments that exploited magnetic force for navigation in Europe date back to the late 12th century, largely thanks to the knowledge brought by Arab merchants and navigators: we find references in Alexander Neckam's "De nominibus utensilium" and in the works of Guyot de Provins, in which the lodestone is described as a "sailor's companion." The inventory of a 13th-century Sicilian ship, the San Nicolò, also mentions the presence on board of a lodestone and a "wooden compass."

Do you provide an authenticity certificate/expertise?
Of course! The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin. Antik Arte & Scienza provides an expertise (as warranty) that contains a description, period and assignment or the author, if known, of the item.
