1892010104045734Code 2160 Antique globe SchedlerInteresting and rare antique terrestrial globe edited by J. Schedler’s Jersey City N.J., 1887. Patinated cast iron fusion base with three feet united in the centre and papier maché sphere. Besides territorial map there are oceanic currents and the most important trade routes in that period. Very good condition. Height cm 54 – inches 21.28, width cm 43 – inches 16.94.

Joseph Schedler founder of the Schedler firm, and his successor Herman Schedler, were German immigrants who settled in New York and Jersey City and active in the second half of the nineteenth century. They made many globes, especially for didactic use, particularly significant because the company Schedler was among the first American manufacturers of globes to include several new details, such as shipping lines, telegraph lines, ocean currents. The globes Schedler won several awards at the International Exhibition in Paris of 1867, at the American Institute Fair in 1869 and at the International Exhibition in Vienna in 1873.

Terrestrial and celestial antique globes, made during centuries, give us another confirmation that man has always wanted to know the world and to measure and represent it using all possible systems.
