15122010185330734Code 2365 Antique globe AdamiTable terrestrial antique globe by C. Adami, by H. Kiepert, for the Reimer firm, and edited in 1873. Very good condition. Bronze casting decorated base with engraved brass meridian circle. Height cm 64 – inches 25.22, diameter of sphere cm 34 – inches 13.4.

The firm Verlag Dietrich Reimer (1818-1899) was an important globes maker between XIX and XX centuries, founded in Berlin in 1845. In 1852 the firm bought the Carl Adami & co., another globe making company, so Adami (1802-1874) became a cartographer for Reimer, updating Reimer's globes. In the same year Heirich Kiepert (1818-1899) was hired by Reimer, and this cartographer innovated the design of the Reimer's globes. Reimer retired in 1891 and the company continued under the leadership of E. Vohsen, producing globes until 1960's.

Till the beginning of ‘900 spheres for globes were made like in the origins: two papier maché hemispheres, pressed and modelled on or in a hemispherical mould, dried and reinforced inside with a wooden board, so pasted and covered by a thin coat of plaster; on this support they were pasted the lunes of globe about zones between two meridians, generally 12, paper printed by engraved copper plate and coloured, and covering 30 degrees longitude.
