Papier maché sphere, turned and ebonized wooden base, engraved brass meridian circle. Very good condition. Height cm 60 - inch 23.6, diameter of sphere cm 30 - inch 11.8.

Ernst Schotte & co. was an important globes and planetaria maker firm, established in Berlin in 1855. By the 1870s the E. Schotte & co. firm produced many globes in over 25 languages; they also produced many celestial globes, lunaria and planetaria, exported all over Europe, with a particular and decorative design. The firm continued its production until the early XX century.

In the XVIII century, the official geographer of Louis XV King of France, Robert Didier de Vaugondy, thanks to the practical experience gained in the construction of globes, expanded the article "Globe" in the Encyclopédie explaining very well the difference between a celestial globe (representing the concave surface of the sky with its constellations) and a terrestrial globe (which represents the surface of the Earth with its seas, islands, rivers, cities, etc.) and all the techniques to make them: two papier maché hemispheres pressed and molded onto or into a hemispherical mold, let dry and reinforced with a plank of wood, then glued and covered with a thin layer of plaster on which the lunes of the globe were glued (the regions between two meridians, usually twelve, each covering 30 degrees of longitude), made of paper that had been previously printed by engraving on copper plate and then colored.
