1451382132Code 4972 Columbus globeGlobe published in 1930 by Columbus Erdglobus and cartographers Dr. R Neuse and C. Luther, wooden square base complete with compass and the meridian circle of engraved and chromium plated brass. Besides territorial maps very well defined this globe depicts the ocean currents and the major trade routes of the period. Height 65 cm - 25.5 inch, diameter of sphere cm 32 - inch 12.59. Very good condition.

Established in 1909 in Berlin by Paul Oestergarrd, nephew of Peter J. Oestergaard, a globes maker at the end of the XIX century, the firm Columbus is the oldest globes manufacture, working still today, in the world. During more than a century it has innovated the globes making and the experience accumulated over 4 generations has earned the Columbus brand a status of a premier globe manufacturer.

The first known globe is attributed by Strabo, historian and geographer, to Cratete from Mallo (about 150 B.C.). First globes, in early XVI century, were made because of geographical explorations and they were used for didactic uses in courts and colleges, then in universities and high schools. In the XIX century, because of trade, scholastic obligation and wishes to know far countries, the old method to make globes was changed in the new technique of lithography that made possible to print and to update maps that following new discoveries became old very quickly.
