1487258504Code 5298 French globeGlobe published in 1930 circa by the French mapmaker J. Forest Edition for the Ministry of Education. Besides territorial map there are oceanic currents and main trade routes of that period. Papier-mâché sphere and turned and ebonized wooden base. Very good condition. height 40 cm, diameter of sphere 20 cm.

Today it is often mis-used the word "world map" to indicate the item that cartographers call "globe", that is the representation of the Earth through a sphere; instead a world map is a geographical representation of the world in plan, and it is an expression dating back to the Middle Ages (mappa mundi). Historians have different opinions on what may be regarded as the oldest cartographic documents, but one of them is a clay tablet discovered in 1930 at the ruins of the village of Ga-Sur, about 200 miles at the north of the site of Babylon, and attributed at the time of the dynasty of Sargon of Akkad (2300-2500 BC), and which represents two hills cut by a river.
