The Super G Constellation was a civilian aircraft produced by Lockheed starting in 1951. It was known for its speed, long-distance capability (up to 8,000 km), and passenger comfort. The aircraft became a symbol of modernity, innovation, and the expansion of international commercial flights. It was used by major airlines such as TWA and Pan Am for transatlantic routes and is remembered as one of the most iconic aircraft of the postwar era.
The aluminum aircraft was not merely decorative; it also represented the era of civil aviation, a symbol of global connectivity and technological progress. Mounted on a stand that allowed it to rotate around the globe, the aircraft evoked the concept of intercontinental travel.
These globes were not only educational tools, but also design objects, symbolizing an era of technological innovation and changes in people's perceptions of the world. In short, the Weber Costello globe featuring the Lockheed Super Constellation aircraft is an object that encapsulates the history of 20th-century aviation, cartography, and design, representing a connection between the terrestrial and aerial worlds, symbolizing an era of great technological progress.
C. F. Weber & Co. purchased the globe business of A. H. Andrews & Co. in 1896. The company became Weber Costello Frick Co. in 1902 and Weber Costello in 1909. By the 1920s, the company boasted that it had some of the largest and best-equipped factories in the world, boasting 40 years of experience in globe manufacturing. Between the wars, Weber Costello became a leading supplier of school globes in the United States, working with cartographers and publishers throughout Europe. The company's fame came during World War II, when it produced a pair of 50-inch (127 cm) diameter globes, sending one to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the other to Winston Churchill in London so they could coordinate their strategic plans by looking at the same globe. Production of Weber Costello globes continued until the 1960s, after which the company ceased its globe business.
