1764082074Code 8340 Small Terrestrial GlobeAdvertising globe for the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Versicherungskasse. This is a German promotional globe from the early 20th century, made for offices, stations, and railway industry managers. Papier-mâché sphere covered with brightly colored lithographed paper spindles, metal base complete with meridian circle. Good condition. Dimensions: 12 x 17 cm – 4.8 x 6.7 cm. The Deutsche Eisenbahn-Versicherungskasse was one of the main mutual funds linked to the German railway industry, active since the early decades of the 20th century and particularly influential between the 1920s and 1950s. It provided life, accident, and pension insurance for railway personnel and frequently distributed high-quality promotional materials, often produced by companies specializing in educational materials and office supplies. It's not just an educational globe, but a desk object designed to combine decorative and advertising purposes, recalling the insurance services offered by the fund for railway employees, travelers, and families. Made by German manufacturers specializing in educational tools and office supplies, the globe reflected the attention to detail and quality typical of the era. After World War II, with the reorganization of railway insurance, production of these globes ceased.

The first globes date back to the early 16th century. Born from the impetus of great geographical explorations, they were immediately used for educational purposes in princely courts, monasteries, and colleges. In the 18th century, thanks to the work of Louis XIV's official geographer, both the celestial globe—representing the concave surface of the sky with its constellations—and the terrestrial globe, which instead shows the Earth's surface with seas, islands, rivers, and cities, became widespread. Production techniques involved the creation of two papier-mâché hemispheres, pressed and modeled on or inside a hemispherical mold, left to dry, and internally reinforced with a wooden board. The hemispheres were then glued together and covered with a thin layer of plaster, on which the globe's time zones were applied: areas between two meridians, usually twelve, each covering 30 degrees of longitude. The time zones were made of paper printed by engraving on a copper plate, then colored.
