1664447654Code 672 Praetorian TabletVery rare praetorian tablet in brass and wood signed Cittelli in Milan from the early 19th century. Instrument for tracing and topographical surveying, complete with tripod in walnut and removable brass, base of the tablet in walnut wood with brass reinforcements and adjustment screws, large compass with fixing screws, telescope diopter with ruler and sights, level, plumb line, square, recall whistle, numerous accessories necessary for fixing and two original wooden boxes for housing the instrument, one for the tablet and the other for the tripod. The name derives from Pretorius, a professor in Altdorf, who conceived it in 1590. Used for tracing medium and small scale maps, it allows you to draw in detail. It was also used very often in archeology.

Pasquale Cittelli died in 1842. He was one of the most appreciated manufacturers of Italian scientific instruments at the beginning of the 19th century, he received awards and medals; his workshop possessed one of the best dividing machines present in Italy at the time. The atelier was located along the Naviglio, to the left of the Ponte di Porta Tosa third door n. 300.

Topography studies instruments, surveying techniques, calculus and plans to represent graphically in scale a part of the Earth surface on a map, indicating its details like streets, rivers, buildings, cultivations… Topography is one of the most antique science. Egyptians measured lands along the Nile for tracing borders after periodic overflows of the river. Greeks and Romans used some topographical method very precise; some topographers teams (“gromatici”) following Roman legions traced borders and divided conquered lands in regular plots, then described and represented on copper plates. Arabs used topography to realize maps and to measure agrarian surfaces and lands for cadastral use.
