1725726363Code 7991 Slide RuleAntique ebonite, brass and papier-mâché spiral slide rule, designed by George Fuller of Belfast, professor of engineering at Queen's University of London in 1878, made by STANLEY in the thirties and housed in its original mahogany wood box, complete with brass support for mounting on the base and instruction booklet for use. Box measurements cm 36x11,7x11, inches 14.1x4.6x4.5.

The logarithmic line of the ruler is organized in a spiral on the surface of a cylinder, so as to increase the length of the scale and therefore make the calculation increasingly precise. The logarithmic line is 50 turns and all four-figure numbers have a mark on the scale or are intermediate between two marks, so that accurate four-figure results are easily obtained. This type of ruler was the most successful; it was equivalent to eight times the length of a rectangular rule and allowed three to four decimals to be read.

William Stanley 1829-1909 The son of a mechanical engineer, he began working with his father in 1849, immediately making improvements to technical drawings and simultaneously creating new instruments. The study of drawing tools was adapted to the needs of the industrial revolution. All over the world, sectors of activity such as surveyor, engineer, architect and navigator were expanding at an ever-increasing rate. Surveys were made of vast areas, such as the Indian continent, while nautical charts of huge tracts of ocean were charted. This climate of innovation led William Stanley to open his first workshop in Holborn London in 1854, for the production of drawing instruments.
