There are instruments that are fundamental for all scientists and technicians, be they astronomers, navigators, topographers, engineers or architects. These specialists need to make precise drawings, often to scale, take measurements on maps and plans, and make scale copies. The fundamental drawing tools have a long history, dating back to Greek culture, which began to study the spatial relationships and shapes of bodies; geometry is therefore the first science to be rationally organized as a science of figures.
