1764952262Code 1Centrotavola CenterpieceSilver-plated metal centerpiece from the second half of the 19th century, mounted on an oval ebonized wooden base and decorated with two carved and engraved emu eggs, depicting a kangaroo and a peacock. The two eggs are framed and mounted within a silver-plated metal garland-shaped stand, decorated with beautifully executed branches, flowers, and leaves, surmounted by an emu. The lower part features a kangaroo and an emu. Good condition; the fabric at the base shows wear and some minor losses. Dimensions: 28 x 13.5 x 34.5 cm - 11 x 5.3 x 13.6 in

From the mid-19th century until the early 20th century, Australian silversmiths revived the European fashion of mounting ostrich eggs, using smaller, locally characteristic emu eggs. The frames were often decorated with motifs of Australian flora and fauna, and sometimes with Aboriginal figures. The art of carving or engraving emu eggshells is known as Kalti Paarti carving and originated in Australia in the mid-19th century. The shell is hollowed out through two small holes and then carved into the outer layers: the varying depths reveal the various natural colors of the egg's interior, creating chiaroscuro effects and highly detailed designs. The emu egg is composed of ten layers, each progressively lighter in color. This type of object represents a fusion of European silversmithing traditions and the use of emu eggs, enriched with decorations that evoke nature and, in part, indigenous culture. The result is an artefact closely linked to Australian colonial history.
