1764952932Code 2Centrotavola CenterpieceA late 19th-century silver-plated metal centerpiece. Four palm leaf branches, supported by a silver-plated metal arch, hold an emu egg engraved and sculpted with the image of two emus. Beneath the arch supporting the egg is a depiction of an Aboriginal man with his feet on a large oak leaf, hunting with a boomerang in his hand. The scene is mounted on a diamond-shaped base supported by four round feet and decorated with leaves. Good condition. Dimensions: 22 x 11 x 26.5 cm – 8.8 x 4.3 x 10.4 in

From the mid-19th century until the early 20th century, Australian silversmiths revived the European fashion of mounting ostrich eggs, using smaller, locally characteristic emu eggs. The eggshell was often decorated with motifs of Australian flora and fauna, and sometimes with Aboriginal figures. The art of carving or engraving emu eggshells is known as Kalti paarti carving and originated in Australia in the mid-19th century. The eggshell is hollowed out through two small holes and then carved into the outer layers: the varying depths reveal the various natural colors of the egg's interior, creating chiaroscuro effects and highly detailed designs. This type of object represents a fusion of European silversmithing traditions and the use of emu eggs, enriched with decorations that evoke nature and, in part, indigenous culture, making it closely linked to Australia's colonial history.
