Researched since ancient times as a material for jewelery and artistic artefacts, coral was also used as a means of exchange in trade between Europe and Asia in the century. XVI; symbol of royalty, it adorned the robes of sovereigns and princes. Therapeutic virtues and the ability to ensure the protection of marine deities were attributed to it. With the advent of the Christian era, coral came to symbolize the blood that Jesus shed on Golgotha, through which humanity redeems itself. In the Middle Ages it symbolized the sovereignty of Christ, also due to the shape of its twigs, often in the shape of a cross.

Corals are small animals called arborescent-shaped polyps, which form a common calcareous skeleton and for some species becomes the base of a coral reef. Through successive stratifications of colony remains, actual formations of organogenic rocks originate. The color of coral can vary from white, to pale pink and deep red. Reproduction can occur either by division or sexually. In the latter case, the larva (planula), having emerged from the egg, after a short period of free life, fixes itself on a support on the bottom, giving rise to a new colony. For a long time, coral was considered a mineral or a vegetable. The red color is especially widespread in the Mediterranean from the Gulf of Naples to Sicily and Sardinia at a depth ranging from 20 to over 200 m.
