The propeller gradually taken the place of the propulsion wheel from the mid-nineteenth century: one of the first trials took place in 1827 when the Czech engineer Josef Ressel experimented with this new type of propulsion in the port of Trieste.
This first experiment was followed by others, such as when John Ericsson, in 1839, made a ship to cross the Atlantic in forty days. In 1849 he was even organized a tug of war between two ships with the same power, one with a propulsion wheel and one with a propeller, which ended with the victory of the second one; the propeller became the most widely propulsion system used in marine at the end of the 1800.
About the use of propellers in marine applications, it is still necessary to study the liquid environment in which they are used. The propellers used in this field, except in the case of submarines, are always placed in the stern area for safety reasons.
