1525703022Code 5832 Plath sextantBrass sextant signed C. Plath Hamburg of the late nineteenth century complete with lenses and accessories, placed in its beautiful original mahogany box complete with lock with key and brass hinges. Flap and vernier made of silver, wooden handle, 3 colored glasses for the fixed mirror and 4 for the mobile one, three telescopes, a microscope for reading the vernier, graduated from 0 to 155 °, index and horizon mirros. Measures of box 29x29 cm h 14. Very good condition and fully functional.

The company C. Plath was established in 1837 in Hamburg initially reselling nautical instruments from England. Around 1857, after a period of apprenticeship and frequent trips to Europe, Carl Plath opened his laboratory for the production of scientific instruments. After some years the company specialized in the construction of nautical instruments, sextants, compasses and barometers. In 1889 Carl Plath was honored at an exhibition of industrial craftsmanship for the excellence of his instruments. In 1905 at the age of 80 he left the company to his son Teodor.

In order to measure a height of a star (for example, the Sun), you have to set the instrument in a vertical plane and, looking through the sight device, to mark out the line of the horizon visible through the non-silvered half of the fixed mirror. Moving the alidade that is together with this mirror, make sure that the light rays coming from the star, and then reflected by the mobile mirror and by the silver half of the fixed mirror, be directed from the fixed mirror to the observer: if you look through the sight device, you see the image of the star, obtained for double reflection, coinciding with the line of the horizon. The height of the star is expressed by the angle whose value is read on the graduated scale. The filter is used when the star is the Sun.
