1523267562Code 6052 Old marine chronometerMarine chronometer signed Thomas Porthouse; on the dial you read "Thomas Porthouse Maker to Admirality 10 Northampton Square London n. 7013", firm active at this address from 1835 to 1851. Elegant original rosewood case with double lid, hidden hinges, brass corner guard. On the outside of the cover and above the opening key there is a brass label engraved with the inscription J. Histøl Kristiansand S., who was almost certainly the watchmaker in Norway (in Kristiansand), where the chronometer has been for sale. Inside the case there is the chronometer mounted on a universal joint, locked by a screw lever. The chronometer movement is contained in a brass case and closed inside by a glass crown, the stopwatch case is fixed on a universal joint to give stability and flatness to the instrument. The 56-hour charge is given to the chronometer by inserting a special non-original chromed brass key, placed inside the box. The dial has a diameter of 11 cm and is made of silver metal, the hands are of gold and the hours in Roman numerals; the seconds are marked by a small dial at the bottom, while a second dial at the top indicates the charge status of the watch. Box cm 17.7x17.5 h 18.5 - inches 6.88x6.88 h 7.28.

Marine chronometer was invented by John Harrison (1693-1776) and it was one of the most important technical inventions. This instrument, measuring the correct time on board helps to resolve the problem of calculation of longitude on the sea. In XV century, development of oceanic navigation and the following discoveries of new lands increased the world trade and the possibility to navigate in a safe way became very important for all seafaring nations. After two centuries it was found a solution for this problem.
