Already in the ancient Egypt the fishing line was retained neatly on a piece of wood or bone with pins at the ends. In a painting by the Chinese artist Ma Yuan, in the Sung dynasty (960-1280), a fisherman uses a rod equipped with a reel, which then seems to have been used in China since 300 AD. About the introduction of the reel in the West, in some English treaties of the seventeenth century reel seems a tool known, but we do not know who was the inventor. The reels of that period were made in solid wood, walnut or oak before, then mahogany and rosewood, but wood was fragile and then they began to be introduced iron and brass elements.
