1605536225Code 6771 Vintage ship logShip log made of brass in the shape of a harpoon, signed T. Walker's Patent Harpoon Yacht Log A 1 London, made in the second half of the 19th century. It is an antique nautical instrument, very rare and with a characteristic shape, which measured the distance and speed of a ship. It was thrown overboard and dragged behind the ship itself; rotating thanks to its propeller, it transmitted the number of revolutions made on itself to the three dials made on an enamelled metal plate placed in the center of the log; the quadrants reported measurements in miles from 0 to 100 in tens, from 0 to 10 in units, from 0 to 1 in quarters. The data was then read every hour to also derive the speed. In excellent condition and in working order, length 48 cm - 18.89 inches, propeller width 18.5 cm - 7.28 inches, log body diameter 3.5 cm - 1.37 inches.

From the 17th century onwards people had made many attempts to devise a mechanical log which would automatically record the ships distance done and ships speed. Edward Massey invented a mechanical log in 1802 with four blades which was used by the Admiralty from 1807-1815 and the design was further refined by Thomas Walker and Son, who took out a patent for the A1 Harpoon Log in 1861. A1 refers probably to the A1 specifications of Lloyds Shipping Insurance as being the best that could be produced.
