Benjamin Martin established an instrument-making business in 1750 and his son Joshua joined him in 1778. In 1782 he patented a method for producing brass drawn tube and the same year Charles Tulley bought the firm. In 1844 the business was bought by Robert Mills: the firm prospered and Alexander Clarkson took it over in 1873. Mr Broadhurst joined the firm as a partner in 1892, and he moved it to 63 Farringdon Road, EC1 in 1908, naming the building Telescope House but trading as "Broadhurst Clarkson & Co." Between 1914 and 1918 the company set up further telescope factories in Watford, and a lens-making facility in central London, and during the 1920s and '30s the business continued to flourish. We can find the firm as listed Exhibitor in the British Industries Fair in 1947, in manufacturers of telescopes, astronomical, naval and marine instruments.

The legend tells that a day in 1608 the son of an optician in Middelburg, Hans Lipperhey, playing with some lenses of his father, put a concave lens near his eye, having in the hand the other convex lens: with his arm stretched to the point of the cathedral’s bell tower, he saw the weather-cock larger and nearer. He showed it to his father and he fixed these lenses on a small board, making easier the observation, creating the first rudimentary instrument for optical approaching. But Lipperhey was unlucky, in fact when he sent in an application to General States of Holland for the patent for this new optical instrument, in a few days some other opticians claimed this invention.
