1705665476Code 7820 Ship Architecture PrintCopper plate engraving print. Published as the act directs July 1. 1816 by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown Paternoster Row. This is table no. XI of the publication concerning naval architecture of 1 July 1816, depicting the side elevation and other details of a 38-gun frigate. The print bears the signature of the engraver Milan sculp. Good condition. Measurements 73.7x29.3 cm – 29x11.5 inches.

Originally the term frigate referred to a small-draft boat with one or two sailing and rowing masts. During the sixteenth century and especially in the seventeenth century the typology changed considerably. All war, merchant and privateer ships with 3 masts with lateen sails on the mizzen mast and equipped with around 40 guns were called frigates. Following the numerous modifications that affected all the main sailing navies of the time, from the mid-seventeenth century onwards, the three-masted warship, equipped with a single covered battery deck, was called frigate. Used for patrolling, exploration, coastal warfare and escort duties.
