1705662740Code 7823 Brockhaus PrintPrint depicting plate no. 21 from engraving on steel plate and taken from the illustrated Atlas published by F.A. Brockhaus, in Leipzig 1869-1875 the iconographic encyclopedia of sciences and arts. It is a print relating to naval construction and depicting six views on a single sheet: new dock for the construction of iron ships, dry dock, hauling of a ship's keel, ship on the dock at low tide, 3 lighthouses, 5 different boats at sea with lighthouse on the left. Glossary with explanation of the views depicted in German. Leipzig circa 1870. In good condition, some stains on the edges, non-coeval walnut frame. Measurements 36.5x19 cm – 14.4x7.5 inches.

The publishing house was founded in Amsterdam in 1805 by Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (1772-1823), a German publisher from whom the famous Brockhaus encyclopedia takes its name. In 1811 Brockhaus moved his company to Altenburg and in 1818 he built his own printing house in Leipzig. The publishing house also owned an editorial bookshop and an antiquarian bookshop. The paternal business was continued by his sons Friedrich and Heinrich, followed by his grandchildren and various descendants. In 1943 the Leipzig headquarters was completely destroyed by bombing and the new headquarters was moved to Wiesbaden in 1945.
