Battista Boschi. Good condition, small diffused stains. Frame measures 29x20.5 cm – 11.4x8.1 inches.

Freight is a practice used for maritime trade since ancient times which has evolved over time. The term freight comes from the Greek naulon which meant ship. Originally it was a contract according to which by paying a freight price, one could transport goods or people by means of a ship. Already two thousand years ago both the Romans and the Greeks practiced rental and it was considered a highly respected activity in ancient Rome. During the Middle Ages, around the year 1000, with the intensification of trade following the Crusades, there was an increase in trade with the East in Europe. Goods arrived in great demand from distant lands such as Arabia and India, both for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical purposes. Small and large companies began to rent ships and crews to merchants for the journey with substantial profits.
