1738252135Code 8079 Umbrella StandRare "Jack Tar" umbrella stand and sailor's stick holder in cast brass, English manufacture dating back to the end of the 19th century.
The umbrella stand is depicted by a Jack Tar sailor wearing a wide-brimmed hat, standing above his combat paraphernalia, consisting of an anchor with chain, shovel, gunpowder barrel and various ropes.
The sailor holds a rope in his hands wrapped to form the upper support for the umbrella and stick, at the bottom a removable tray to collect drips.
Jack Tar was the English expression commonly used and referring to sailors of the merchant navy and the Royal Navy in the era in which the British Empire was at its greatest splendor.
Jack was a generic term frequently used to distinguish men who went to sea.
While the suffix Tar was used starting from 1600 and seems to derive from the name of the tar-coated canvas used to make clothing in order to make it waterproof.
