1742654834Code 8085 Small PropellerSmall two-bladed bronze propeller, English manufacture from the 1930s. Width 19 cm – 7.5 inch, height 8.5 cm – 3.4 inch, depth 4.5 cm – 1.8 inch. The propeller is mounted on a custom-made iron and brass base. Good condition.

The propeller gradually replaced the wheel propulsion starting from the mid-19th century: one of the first experiments took place in 1827 when the Czech engineer Josef Ressel tested this new type of propulsion in the port of Trieste. This first experiment was followed by others, such as that of John Ericsson who, in 1839, allowed a ship to cross the Atlantic in forty days. In 1849 a tug-of-war competition was even organized between two ships of the same power, one with wheel propulsion and one with a propeller propulsion, which ended with the victory of the second; the propeller became the most used propulsion solution in the navy starting from the end of the 19th century. In the case of the use of propellers in marine applications, a particular study of the liquid environment in which they will be used is still necessary today. The propellers used in this field, except in the case of submarines, are always placed in the stern area for safety reasons.
