1753873771Code 8213 PelorusEnglish brass pelorus from the second half of the 19th century, mounted on a universal joint inside its original mahogany box with brass hinges and latches.
The instrument features a filter sighting system and an eight-compass compass rose complete with an engraved protractor circle.
Good condition, fully functional. Box dimensions: 20.5 x 20 x 16 cm – 8.1 x 7.8 x 6.3 inches
It is a graphometer inserted into a graduated circular crown and with the cardinal points of a compass, but without magnets, which is used to determine the ship's position and detect objects not detected by normal compasses: by sighting two recognizable coastal features, the corresponding lines of direction are plotted on the nautical chart; the point where these two lines meet is the ship's position. The term pelorus derives from the name of Hannibal's pilot who assisted him in leading his troops across Europe and maintained contact with Carthage by sea.

Do you provide an authenticity certificate/expertise?
Of course! The legislative decree n. 42/2004 stipulates that who sells works of art or historical and archaeological items has the obligation to deliver to the purchaser the documents attesting to the authenticity of the object, or at least to submit the documents relating to the probable attribution and origin. Antik Arte & Scienza provides an expertise (as warranty) that contains a description, period and assignment or the author, if known, of the item.

Shipping by DHL or UPS is free (but if we are shipping to a country non-EU remember that any taxes and customs duties are on your expense), and items will be sent just after receiving of payment.

Other countries: delivering on the average in 5 weekdays; custom duties charged to the buyer.
