1756745477Code 8224 Antique TelescopeRound brass telescope with a mahogany-wrapped handle and three-extension focusing mechanism. English manufacture, mid-19th century. Complete with a custom-made wood and brass base. To focus the telescope, extend it fully and then shorten the final extension, holding the instrument close to your eye until it is in focus. Good condition, missing the eyepiece dust cover, fully functional. Maximum length 42 cm – 16.5 in, minimum 15 cm – 5.9 in, focal diameter 3 cm – 1.2 in.

In 1608, an eyeglass maker from Middelburg, Hans Lipperhey, filed a patent application with the States General of Holland for a new optical instrument: a convex lens (for the farsighted) and a concave lens (for the nearsighted), mounted at the ends of a tube just over a hand's length, which magnified distant objects up to three times. Legend has it that one day in 1608, the eyeglass maker's sons began playing with the lenses their father had made in his workshop. By chance, one of them placed a concave lens near his eye, holding a convex one in his hand and pointing his arm toward the top of the cathedral bell tower. To his great surprise, the boy then saw the weathercock on the spire grow larger and approach. Having shown the phenomenon to his father, he fixed the lenses, suitably spaced, on a small board, thus making observation easier, giving rise to the first rudimentary optical approach instrument.
